Aims
- To provide students with an understanding of how businesses develop and implement strategy.
Content
- Strategic analysis of a business’s current objectives, market position and direction
- Strategic choice available to a business
- How businesses choose between competing strategies
- Implementation and monitoring of strategies and strategic performance
Learning Outcomes
Subject-specific Knowledge:
- Be able to identify and analyse the consequences of a business’s current objectives, market position and direction
- Have an awareness of the strategic choices available to a business
- Have knowledge of appropriate methods of implementing strategies, and the ways in which management information can be used to measure and monitor strategic performance
Subject-specific Skills:
- Be able to analyse, for a given situation, the external factors which may impact upon a business’s performance and position
- Be able to evaluate the likely consequences of strategic choices and recommend strategies to meet the objectives of a business
- Be able to develop a business plan to achieve a business’s strategic objectives, recommend an appropriate organisational structure and explain the process of effective change management.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module
- Learning will be based on knowledge transfer from lectures, seminars and personal study; investigation of cases and real world organisations will encourage students to develop awareness of cultural differences and apply these to development of their skills in managing themselves and others in such contexts.
- Classroom activities and independent study will develop students' knowledge of business strategies and choices and their skills of strategic evaluation.
- The examination will test students' understanding of the main strategic concepts and choices and their skills of planning and evaluation.
