Aims
- Development of speaking and listening skills.
- Enhance ability to construct and convey meaning in written Standard English.
- Develop reading with comprehension, purpose and reason.
Content
- The module will provide an opportunity to read prose, poetry and drama texts and texts from non-fiction and media.
- These texts will provide the basis for students to engage in discussions to develop their ability to analyse, imagine, argue and persuade.
- These texts will provide the basis for students to produce written work of the following genres: informative, persuasive, analytical and creative.
Learning Outcomes
Subject-specific Knowledge:
- By the end of the module the students will know:
- how to communicate orally in a clear and appropriate way
- how to read with confidence, being able to express their responses effectively
- how to ensure their text is legible, spelling and grammar are accurate, so that meaning is clear
Subject-specific Skills:
- By the end of the module students will have acquired the skills to:
- Develop their ability to express themselves in speech and writing with increasing confidence and sophistication
- Read and critically analyse different types of writing using specialist vocabulary when appropriate,for example, poetic terminology.
- Develop skills in speech and writing for a variety of different purposes and audiences
- Organise relevant information clearly and coherently
Key Skills:
- By the end of the module students will:

- be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills
- be able to demonsrate literary analysis
- The assignment will assess:-SK1,SK4,SS1,SS2,SS3,SS4,KS1,KS3. The oral presentation will assess:-SK1,SS1,SS3,KS2.
- The exam will assess:- SK2,SK3,SkK4, SS1,SS2,SS3,SS4,KS1.

- Teaching will be in the form of tutor-led classes and discussions
- Learning and understanding will be consolidated through the use of exercises, group work, discussions, tutorials and students’ own study.
- Knowledge and skills will be assessed by a summative assignment, oral presentation and an examination.
