Aims

  • To provide students with the ability to critically evaluate the information needs of management for control and for decision making;
  • To provide students with a critical understanding of the context of the use of management accounting information for control and an appreciation of the limitations of the information.

Content

  • Costs for control and short-term decision making
  • Budgeting and performance measurement
  • Cash flow forecasting and working capital management
  • Long-term corporate decision making and managerial incentives
  • Investment appraisal and real options
  • Corporate debt management

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • Have an advanced knowledge and critical understanding of the information needs of management for control and decision making;
  • Have a critical appreciation of the context of the use of that information;
  • Have a critical appreciation of recent academic literature in this area and the implications for current management practice.

  • Be able to use selected tools of financial decision making to see the benefits of informed decision making.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • The learning outcomes will be met by a combination of lectures, workshops, case studies and guided reading.
  • The assessment of the module, by the written examination, is designed to test the acquisition and articulation of knowledge, and the ability to apply and interpret it in specific contexts.
