Aims

  • The aim of the module is to enable students to build up knowledge of real-world business and management dynamics within the East Asia region. The module will prepare students for working and doing business in the region and is based upon in-depth analysis of different national and business management systems from an inter-disciplinary perspective.

Content

  • Broad economic explanations for East Asia growth, understanding competing paradigms of development, as well as the nature of economic crisis within the region.
  • Introduction to the theory of business groups, the dominant form of business organization in East Asia.
  • Analysis of the Japanese, Chinese and Korean business contexts, including study of cultural similarities and differences, and business groups and inward and outward FDI.
  • An appreciation of emerging issues, latest developments and special situations within the East Asia region and what these mean for today’s real-world business management.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • Teaching is by lectures and seminars. Learning takes place through attendance at lectures, preparation for and participation in seminars, small group project work and private study.
  • Formative assessment is by means of a written assignment.
  • Summative assessment is by means of a 2500 word written essay, individual class contributions and a small group presentation. The individual contribution to case discussions in seminars will be assessed over the course of 8 out of the 10 seminars. The group project will be to develop and deliver a presentation on an East Asian management topic, this will be assessed in one of the Term 2 seminars by a 15 minute presentation including Q&A.
