Prerequisites

• Either EDUC 2331, or EDUC 2371, or EDUC 2391, if not taken as a co-requisite.

Corequisites

• Either EDUC 2331, or EDUC 2371, or EDUC 2391, if not already taken as a pre-requisite, or EDUC 326.

Aims

• To allow students to undertake an extended and independent piece of art historical research which both draws upon and develops their understanding of the theory and practice of art history as taught in the Art History modules (EDUC1441, EDUC2331, EDUC2371 & EDUC3261).
• To provide students the opportunity to engage critically with existing art historical scholarship in relation to the subject of their research and to engage with that subject at a deep and meaningful level.
• To encourage students to explore the relationship between the specific debates and issues attendant upon the subject of their study and the wider field of art historical enquiry.
• To prepare students for post-graduate work in the History of Art.

Content

• Double Dissertation on a substantial topic in the field of Art History chosen by the student and approved by the module convenor.

Learning Outcomes

• The student will gain an extended knowledge of the subject of their research
• The student will gain an in-depth understanding of the art historical issues hinging around that subject.
• The student will learn about differing critical approaches relevant to their subject e.g. feminist, socio-historical, psychoanalytical and Modernist views.
• The student will develop their knowledge and understanding of subject-specific terminology.
• The student will gain an understanding of how the specific subject of their research relates to the wider field of art historical enquiry.

• to think critically about differing ways of understanding the subject of their research and will engage with differing critical approaches.
• to negotiate competing views about their subject and how to form a considered opinion in response to those views.
• to undertake extended pictorial analyses of art works and will gain experience in 'reading' and interpreting them.
• experience of using primary sources by working in archives, museums and galleries (where possible).

• Supervision, which monitors the development of the learning outcomes above is appropriate to the writing of an independent study
• Peer teaching and support is encouraged via group meetings and use of Duo.

Summative Assessment

Formative Assessment:

Ideas and progress clarified and reviewed through tutorials and student to receive verbal feedback. Drafts of chapters monitored regularly.
