Aims

  • To offer an opportunity for students to engage in independent learning related to a topic, issue, or ministerial area, not available elsewhere in the programme and suitable to this level.

Content

  • Participants will in consultation and negotiation with the tutor identify a topic, issue, or ministerial area relevant to the study of the theory and practice of ministry and in which there is academic expertise in the institution.
  • An independent learning project will be developed which may include both library and practical research.
  • The area chosen may enhance and integrate study from the taught module programme providing the independent study is clearly distinguished from the content of such taught modules

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • Demonstrate a systematic understanding of key concepts and processes of inquiry involved in the study of one or more themes in theology, ministry and mission, making appropriate connections with the practices of Christian discipleship, ministry and mission in and beyond the church, drawing on the methodologies and findings of recent research in the field.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • Consolidate and extend competences and modes of inquiry in relevant practices of Christian discipleship, mission and ministry in the light of theological, and where appropriate, other disciplines in new contexts.
  • Exercise critical theological reflection knowledgeably, drawing upon a range of theological and other disciplines, using appropriately chosen methodologies, communicating with relevance, rigour, creativity and sensitivity in writing.
Key Skills:
  • Identify, gather, analyse and critically evaluate textual source materials, including material from primary sources and scholarly research, and communicate their findings with clarity and fairness to specialist audiences.
  • Critically evaluate ideas, arguments and assumptions, using them to construct and communicate coherent and well-reasoned arguments, showing critical awareness of their own and others’ beliefs, commitments and prejudices, to specialist audiences.
  • Take responsibility for a project that involves the exercise of initiative, independent inquiry, and the effective management of time, resources and use of IT; meeting deadlines; evaluating the project and learning from it.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • The module will engage the student in the tutorials, negotiation of individual learning, and self-managed study.
