Aims

  • To enhance the subject knowledge and understanding of trainee in the Humanities with particular reference to geography, history and religious studies, to enable students to make informed judgements about the key ideas and concepts which constitute these subjects and the ways of thinking which have led to the development of these ideas and concepts.

Content

  • Key ideas and concepts underpinning the National Curriculum subjects of geography, history and religious studies are introduced and developed in the following contexts.
  • GEOGRAPHY:
  • the process of enquiry, contrasting localities: the interpretation of places using a range of evidence and skills.
  • How to locate places in the world?
  • Our Dynamic and Dangerous Earth - tectonic movements
  • Connecting children to distant places
  • What happens when we have too much or too little water? - floods and droughts
  • Emotional literacy and geography
  • Population - where are the empty and full places in the world? Similarities and differences between places on the planet
  • The Development Gap - how varied are people of the planet?
  • Graphicacy - a key geographical skill
  • Geography Skills and Fieldwork
  • • HISTORY:
  • The achievements of the earliest civilizations (Egypt)
  • Ancient Greece – a study of Greek life and achievements and their influence on the western world
  • A local history study
  • RELIGIOUS STUDIES:
  • Christianity
  • Judaism
  • Islam

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • Students will demonstrate a knowledge of the following key ideas underpinning the National Curriculum foundation subjects of geography, history and religious studies:
  • places, patterns and processes which shape physical and human features in the environment
  • environmental change and sustainable development
  • cause and consequence, continuity and change, time and chronology, and that the past can be interpreted in different ways
  • the nature of belief, deity, worship, authority and commitment.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • think critically and independently about the delivery of humanities as a primary foundation subject
  • critically analyse relevant literature in relation to the primary foundation subjects: geography, history and religious studies
Key Skills:
  • communicate ideas, principles and theories effectively in written form
  • manage time and work to deadlines
  • construct and sustain a reasoned argument
  • evaluate and make use of information from a variety of primary and secondary sources.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • The module will be delivered through a lecture programme.
  • The lectures will examine the key ideas and concepts and the seminars will facilitate student participation in the critical discussion of these ideas and concepts and the critical reflection of key readings and appropriate research.
  • One field visit up to 4 hours
