Aims
- Critically reflect on how diversity impacts education in local and global contexts
- Critically reflect on the relationship between education, intercultural issues, and key concepts such as identity, citizenship and social justice
- Develop critical understanding of multiple identities and attitudes towards others
- Reflect on forms of communication and engagement in contexts of diversity and their implications for education.
Content
- The following topics will be covered:
- Internationalisation and globalisation as contexts for critical multicultural education;
- Global and intercultural citizenship;
- Interculturality and intercultural relationships;
- Multiple identities;
- Multilingualism and education;
- Intercultural competence.
Learning Outcomes
Subject-specific Knowledge:
- Develop a critical understanding of the contexts and factors relating to international and intercultural education in the 21st century.
- Demonstrate critical understanding of the theorites, approaches, and practices of interculturality in the contemporary world and how they impact education.
Subject-specific Skills:
- Articulate and employ key conceps and terminology in the field of International Education and Intercultural Education.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing on issues related to International and Intercultural Education.
Key Skills:
- Work on ideas and issues independently and as part of a group.
- Communicate and present ideas effectively through class presentations and writing.
Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module
- Learning: 11 x 2 hour workshops. These will introduce students to the above topics and will be facilitated by experts in the field from the School of Education. Each workshop will be supported by preparatory and follow-up readings and a learning task that students will undertake during the workshop.

Formative Assessment:
Presentation related to key learning from the module and aspects of the summatives. Summative 1: One 1500 word essay Summative 2: Portfolio (autoethnography of intercultural experience, based on the autobiography of intercultural encounters)
■ Attendance at all activities marked with this symbol will be monitored. Students who fail to attend these activities, or to complete the summative or formative assessment specified above, will be subject to the procedures defined in the University's General Regulation V, and may be required to leave the University
