Aims

  • To enable students to describe and discuss different models of leadership in the church and the workplace.
  • To enable students to reflect upon models of leadership using biblical and theological approaches within the context of the church’s ministry and mission.
  • To encourage students to reflect from a theological and biblical perspective upon their own experiences of leadership.
  • To develop students’ awareness of servant leadership and collaborative ministry in the context of the ministry and mission of the church.
  • To enable students to assess the effect of cultural trends on leadership in the church.

Content

  • Secular, biblical and theological approaches to issues of leadership.
  • The relationship between leadership, authority, service and collaboration from an ecclesiological and missiological perspective.
  • The relationship between understandings of leadership, personal formation and spirituality.
  • Biblical and historical models of ecclesial leadership and their impact on contemporary approaches.
  • The impact of cultural trends on approaches to ecclesial leadership.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • Describe and discuss a range of theological and biblical principles which apply to leadership and collaboration in the context of the church’s ministry and mission.
  • Explore a range of influential ideas about leadership and management from a theological perspective in the context of Christian discipleship, ministry and mission.
  • Describe and discuss historical models of church leadership
  • Discuss the impact of cultural trends on leadership in the church.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • Assess their own exercise of leadership skills within an ecclesial context
  • Reflect theologically upon their experience of group and team membership and leadership.
Key Skills:
  • Carry out a guided task that involves independent inquiry; management of time and resources; using IT; meeting deadlines; evaluating the task and learning from it.
  • Recognise key issues in their own personal and professional development.
