Aims

  • To enable students to gain an understanding of the principles and practices of adult learning and the skills required to apply them.
  • To encourage students to reflect on the place of education in the mission and ministry of the church.

Content

  • Models of learning theory and practice, including relevant concepts such as learning styles, group dynamics, and faith development.
  • Skills needed to design, produce, implement and evaluate learning activities and resources.
  • An exploration of the range of learning opportunities in the ministry and mission of a local church.
  • The focus of this module is on generic knowledge and skills for adult learning; the module entitled L5-10 Education and the Learning Church in Context is designed to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in this module to specific communities of learners.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • Explain and analyse in detail the essential features of adult education theory and practice, with reference to a church context.
  • Discuss and evaluate approaches to adult education in relation to discipleship and the ministry and mission of the local church.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • Select, adapt and use learning resources and teaching methods creatively and appropriately with a group of adults engaged in Christian education.
  • Reflect theologically and critically on their experience of facilitating adult learning in the local church context.
Key Skills:
  • Identify, gather, analyse and evaluate source materials for a range of purposes.
  • Take responsibility for a task that involves independent inquiry; the management of time, resources and use of IT; meeting deadlines, evaluating the task and learning from it.
  • Plan their own personal and professional development.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • Teaching methods to be specified by each TEI, selecting from the following:
  • Lectures provide content, a conceptual framework and a survey of approaches within a subject area that enable students to locate their learning in a wider context, to make connections with other disciplines, and to evaluate and apply their learning to different contexts.
  • Small group learning creates an environment where students learn to articulate their knowledge and understanding effectively and in a way that is relevant to the group and its context.
  • Case studies offer students the opportunity to apply their knowledge, analytical and problem-solving skills to the kinds of complex, realistic and often ambiguous situations they are likely to encounter in their profession / ministry/ vocation.
  • Practical classes enable students to practice their ability to communicate a subject matter orally, creatively and appropriately and to learn from the feedback of teachers and peers.
  • Placements and/or work-based learning ensures that students make habitual connections between knowledge, understanding, skills, professional practice and the reality of a specific context, under the supervision of an experienced practitioner.

Students will be expected to demonstrate engagement with the subject matter and the learning outcomes throughout the module by suitable formative assessments that encourage integrative and reflective skills.
