Aims

  • Students will gain a critical understanding of the theories, approaches, and practices of intercultural and international education in the contemporary world, and the importance of intercultural communication in this context.

Content

  • The following topics are covered in the module: globalisation and internationalisation as contexts for intercultural and international education; culture, nationalism, and internationalism; global citizenship and prevention of violent extremism; intercultural/multicultural education; socialisation and the nature of identity; intercultural communicaiton and competence; international education and international schools; approaches to and processes of internationalisation; citizenship, human rights, and social justice.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • demonstrate critical understanding of the contexts and factors relating to global intercultural/international education in the contemporary world
  • demonstrate critical understanding of theories, approaches, and practices linked to intercultural and international education and global citizenship.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • identify and critically evaluate scholarly research within the field of intercultural and international education;
  • articulate and employ key terminology/concepts in the field of intercultural and international education;
  • identify and critically consider problems, issues, challenges and potential ways forward within the field of international and intercultural education;
  • communicate effectively, orally and in writing, within an intercultural setting.
Key Skills:
  • work on ideas and issues independently and as part a group
  • communicate and present ideas effectively through class presentation and writing
  • engage reflectively and critically with research-based literatures;
  • search for and summarise/review key research literature.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • Teaching will be in the form of eight 3-hour workshops that combine a lecture-style tutor-input approach with seminar discussion and group work. During workshops, the tutor will present some of the key theories, concepts, debates, approaches and practices of intercultural and international education through a series of key topics. Students are expected to engage with the themes and issues covered through interaction and critical discussion, student presentations of the literature and group work activities.

Formative Assessment:

Verbal feedback is given to students' contribution during class teaching sessions. Peer feedback and discussion of ideas will take place during workshops. Staff can be contacted for individual help.
