Aims

• Introduction of speaking and listening skills.
• Enhance ability to write in Standard English.
• Promote reading with comprehension, purpose and reason.
• Provide a basis for further study.

Content

• The module will provide an opportunity to read texts from fiction, non-fiction and media.
• These texts will provide the basis for students to engage in discussions to develop their ability to explain, describe, narrate and explore.
• These texts will provide the basis for students to produce written work which uses standard English.

Learning Outcomes

• By the end of the module the students will have acquired the knowledge to:
• Understand how to communicate clearly
• Read with understanding
• Know how to write in ways appropriate to purpose, audience and medium.

• By the end of the module students will have acquired the skills to:
• Write in Standard English appropriate to purpose, medium and audience
• Read with understanding and the ability to analyse materials in context
• Use Standard English with accurate spelling, grammar and punctuation

• By the end of the module students will:
• be able to communicate effectively and accurately in both writing and orally
• be able to demonstrate effective reading skills
• begin to be able to demonstrate literacy analysis
• The assignment will assess:- SK1,SK2,SK3,SS1,SS3,KS1
• The exam will assess:- SK1 SK2 SK3,SS1,SS2,SS3,KS1

• The module will provide an opportunity to read texts from fiction, non-fiction and media.
• These texts will provide the basis for students to engage in discussions to develop their ability to explain, describe, narrate and explore.
• These texts will provide the basis for students to produce written work which uses Standard English.
• Teaching will be in the form of tutor led classes and discussions.
• Learning, understanding and consolidation will take place through the use of group work, discussions, tutorials and students' own study.
• Knowledge and skills will be assessed by a summative assignment, an examination and a formative oral presenation.
