Aims
- To enable students to gain understanding of how and why improvements in participation and volunteering in sport may be developed.
- To enable students to gain understanding of how and why systems for elite sport success may be developed.
- To enable students to gain understanding of how and why sport may be used to contribute to youth development and other socially beneficial outcomes.
- To support students to recognise and develop some of the skills required to deliver and manage sports development programmes.
- To enhance students’ recognition of the policy, social and economic contexts and challenges that affect sports development.
- To introduce students to conceptual and analytic frameworks which can be applied to interrogate sports development policies and practices.
Content
- Policy aims and evidence-bases associated with sports development.
- Conceptual and practical approaches to development of, and through, sport.
- Influential organisations and agencies in sports policy and development.
- Working practices and issues in sports policy and development.
Learning Outcomes
Subject-specific Knowledge:
- By the end of this module students will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the different aims and approaches of sports development policies and practices;
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of evidence and practical issues associated with sports development;
- Explore, analyse and reflect critically on the organizing and positioning of sports development in response to a variety of different aims.

- By the end of this module students will be able to:
- Critically appraise sports development policies and practice drawing on relevant conceptual and analytical frameworks;
- Critically reflect on partnership working and evaluative skills required in sports development;
- Critically interpret information and evidence on sports development policies and practices.

- By the end of this module students will be able to:
- Apply relevant conceptual frameworks and perspectives to sports development;
- Employ social research methodologies to analyse and evaluate sports development policies and practices;
- Explain key issues that impact on the practice of sports development;
- Work with colleagues in collectively comparing sports development programmes;
- Demonstrate written communications skills.
Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module
- Staff-led content, including individual and group-based activities, will introduce students to the conceptual and practiced approaches to sports development.
- Interactive group activities will enable students to critically consider particular approaches to sports development in context, consider how to design and manage sports development programmes, and prepare for assessment;
- Independently,, students will be required to invest time in directed reading, research activities, group-based activity preparation, and study tasks;
- The first presentation assignment will require students to work in groups of 3 or 4 to propose aims and an overarching approach for a new sports development programme, based on reviewing both academic literature and current policy and practice in the field.
- The second essay assignment will require students to review specific issues in the design and management of sport development programmes to consider how these may be addressed in their proposed programme.
- Note – asynchronous content will all be delivered online. Synchronous content may be delivered face-to-face or online.

Non-compulsory formative tasks will be set throughout the module, including in advance of both summative assessments. Feedback will provided in a written and verbal formats, dependent on the nature of the task.
