Aims
- Develop understanding of the pathophysiology and epidemiology of a variety of health conditions and diseases.
- Develop understanding on the role of exercise as medicine for improving the management of health conditions and disease.
- Develop understanding of athlete health and injury prevention.
- Develop appplied skills in exercise prescription, and advanced assessment of clinical and athletic populations.
Content
- This module builds on and extends learning from level 1 and level 2 sport and exercise physiology. The forms of delivery include: Lectures, practical or online workshops* and practitioner guest talks and podcasts, to deliver on::
- Pathophysiology, epidemiology and consequences of a variety of clinical conditions;
- Exercise prescription for a variety of clinical conditions including osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, diabetes, and obesity.
- Athlete health for performance, with topics including concussion screening and management, relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S), menstrual cycle and performance, bone strength and body composition, cardiometabolic health, recovery monitoring, and supporting athlete transition to retirement.
- Advanced assessment of clinical and athletic populations.
Learning Outcomes
Subject-specific Knowledge:
- Causes and consequences of a variety of clinical conditions and the role of exercise for prevention and management;
- Exercise prescription principles;
- Key issues impacting athlete health and performance;
- Assessing and support of clinical populations and athletes.
Subject-specific Skills:
- Skills in prescribing exercise for clinical populations;
- Skills in report writing of physiological conditions and appropriate intervention strategies;
- Skills in the assessment of clinical populations and athletes.
Key Skills:
- Apply knowledge to make practical recommendations;
- Manage time appropriately in order to meet the requirements of independent study;
- Presentation and communication skills;
- Use library and IT facilities to find and integrate information from a range of sources.
Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module
- Teaching and learning will be through lectures, guest talks and podcasts, practical or online sessions and independent reading and preparation;
- Lectures are intended to enhance knowledge and understanding of key principles, methods and issues;
- Practical work will permit the student to apply their theoretical knowledge to more practical contexts and reflect on their own learning needs and interests*;
- The two summative assignments will require students to examine key principles and issues as they apply to clinical populations and to athletes.
- *Practical sessions will be replaced by online seminars/group tutorials if access to the laboratory is restricted due to Covid.

Formative Assessment:
Short tasks including quizzes, practicals (where possible) and involvement in question preparation for guest talks and podcasts. Feedback available through tutorials with staff throughout the module.
