Aims
- To deepen and extend students' knowledge and understanding of the role of the subject leader within the primary school.
- To develop an understanding of the challenges of leadership and how to work with colleagues effectively to support them in teaching across the curriculum.
- To develop an understanding of important current initiatives and curriculum legislation.
- To support students in developing an understanding of themselves as leaders.
- To support students in their understanding of Early Career Teachers and the Early Career Framework.
Content
- Critical reflections on the effectiveness of subject curricula in the development of learning.
- Extending understanding of theories of learning, subject specific pedagogy and the challenges of connecting these in the primary classroom.
- Exploring strategic development in leading subjects and the curriculum; observation, monitoring, action planning, providing CPD and curriculum development.
- Reflecting on the role of the subject lead in the primary school.
- Considering current initiatives and legislation in education.
Learning Outcomes
Subject-specific Knowledge:
- Understanding the role of the subject leader in schools.
- Explore leadership through a chosen core subject; English, mathematics or science.
- Knowledge of keys ideas related to the curriculum in primary education.
- Knowledge of how subject interacts with other subject areas and the impact of this.
- Understand the theoretical background to current debates across the curriculum.
- Explore relevant research and theory on effective leadership and challenges of leadership.
- Understanding of important current initiatives and legislation related to the curriculum.

- Relate educational practice to theory in relation to the subjects in the curriculum.
- Embedding critical reflection of the subject and leadership in relation to education.
- Awareness of new approaches to teaching, learning and assessment.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module
- The course will be delivered through asynchronous lecture presentations and weekly seminars with student participation in specific tasks including relevant reading materials designed to promote analysis and discussion.
- All learning outcomes will be assessed by a composite written assignment, an evidence portfolio and a poster presentation.

Formative Assessment:
For the poster presentation,students will engage in a peer formative task. For the reflective essay with evidence portfolio, students will be provided with written feedback.
