Aims

  • To acquire knowledge about the psychological theories and research on organisational diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices.
  • To develop a critical understanding of current issues that leaders and organisations face around diversity

Content

  • This module examines the psychological theories and empirical research on diversity and the DEI challenges that organisations and leaders face.
  • The module begins with an introduction to the psychology of social diversity, before critically addressing key studies and exploring their application to organisational contexts.
  • Topics are always current and are likely to include models of organisational diversity and decision-making, diversity and career progression, leading diverse teams, organisational climate & culture, team performance, the link between diversity and creativity/innovation, recruitment and selection, and ethics/legal issues.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • Detailed knowledge of a range of topics and methods in the field of behavioural science on the topic of diversity and inclusion.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • Ability to review critically and consolidate understanding of a coherent body of knowledge on the topic of diversity and inclusion and the ability to apply it appropriately.
Key Skills:
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Good IT skills in word processing, data manipulation and data presentation
  • Ability to work independently in scholarship and research within broad guidelines

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • This module will be delivered by the Department of Psychology
  • The module will follow a blended learning approach. The mode of delivery will combine face-to-face elements with online elements.
  • The face-to-face elements will follow a lecture/workshop format and will take place during a short in-person teaching block in September.
  • The module will provide students with detailed knowledge of the key theories and recent empirical studies examining the topic of diversity and inclusion in organisations.
  • The workshops will focus on discussing contemporary diversity challenges and ways to overcome them.
  • There will be approximately 15-weeks of asynchronous (non-live) content and activities for students to complete online outside the in-person block of teaching. Students will have the opportunity to take part in online self-assessment tests, which will feedforward to summative assessments.
  • Live webinars will also be conducted outside the in-person teaching block to facilitate the asynchronous online activities and summative assessment. Webinars will be recorded for students who cannot attend due to work commitments.
  • Students will have access to online discussion boards.
  • The module’s learning outcomes will be assessed by two pieces of summative work: a ”blog post” assignment completed in small groups and an individual written report addressing a case study
  • Both assignments will assess students’ ability to apply the literature to organisational diversity challenges.
  • An assessment of the range, recency, and appropriateness of sources will be included in the overall assessment of the essay.

Formative Assessment:

Formative Assessment: Students will engage with relevant DEI content and write short “blog” style posts on an Ultra discussion forum. They will also engage with real world case studies and be asked to share thoughts on an Ultra forum / in live webinars. In both instances, they will receive feedback on these posts from the lecturer and/or their peers. Online self-assessment tests.


Attendance at all activities marked with this symbol will be monitored. Students who fail to attend these activities, or to complete the summative or formative assessment specified above, will be subject to the procedures defined in the University's General Regulation V, and may be required to leave the University
