Aims

  • To develop an appreciation of the role of financial information in the world of business.
  • To develop an understanding of financial statements and wider reporting to external users.
  • To develop an appreciation of aspects of management accounting and its role in supporting effective financial management of an organisation.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:

  • Be able to demonstrate an appreciation of the role of financial information in the business world
  • Have an understanding of basic financial statements
  • Have an understanding of non-financial performance measurement
  • Have an appreciation of the uses and value of internal financial information in the management of organisations
  • Have an appreciation of basic sources of finance and techniques used to make simple investment decisions

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • Learning takes place through attendance at, preparation for and participation in workshops, and private study.
  • Formative assessment is by means of on-line multiple choice tests.
  • Summative assessment is by means of a written assignment to test students' knowledge and understanding of the subject-matter.
