Aims
- This module is designed solely for students studying Department of Engineering degree programmes.
- It provides a working knowledge of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics

Content
- Thermodynamics - concepts and properties, first and second law
- Fluid Mechanics - Dimensional analysis, fluid statics and fluid dynamics
- Problem sheets
Learning Outcomes
Subject-specific Knowledge:
- An understanding of heat, work, internal energy, 1st and 2nd laws of thermodynamics
- An understanding of Dimensional analysis, fluid statics and fluid dynamics
Subject-specific Skills:
- Solution of problems involving basic thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.
Key Skills:
- Numerical skills appropriate to an engineer
- General problem solving skills
Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module
- Lectures and associated tutorials, as lectures are the most efficient way to impart the required knowledge in this context
- Application of course material to regular problem sheets, as this reinforces knowledge and provides training in problem solving
- Written examinations, as these can directly assess knowledge, understanding and problem solving ability
- Students are able to make use of staff 'Tutorial Hours' to discuss any aspect of the module with teaching staff on a one-to-one basis. These are sign up sessions available for up to one hour per week per lecture course.
- The following Laboratory Classes (assessed as part of ENGI1171 Engineering Practice) relate to content taught in this module: TF11 Pressure Measurement; TF12 Measurement of Flow Rate.
