  • MUSI2711 Performance 2: Practice as Research, or in exceptional cases, MUSI1241 Performance 1: Practice Through History (with recital) and passing an audition in Easter term to the satisfaction of the module leader.

Aims

  • To develop a multi-faceted approach towards the production of a performance event, incorporating an appropriate variety of both musicological and practical skills, building upon the foundation gained in the Level 1 and 2 modules in performance. ï‚·
  • To employ practical and intellectual skills appropriately and effectively in the preparation and delivery of performance. These skills include an ability to communicate music with technical competence, knowledge and understanding of the repertoire and history of the chosen instrument.

Content

  • This module offers opportunities to develop a performance project that showcases not only practical performance skills but also a wide range of knowledge and understanding borne out of a university education in Music. Each student will choose an individual project where s/he presents a performance on her/his chosen instrument. The content of the project will be decided in consultation with a tutor and must be approved by the module leader. The module is based on independent study using knowledge and skills taught at Level 2, and supported by regular individual/group tutorials. Individual instrumental tuition forms essential part of the learning. The public recital will be supplemented by written programme notes, and a 2,000 word essay, providing an opportunity to engage with the project from an academic perspective, enabling students to gain a multidimensional understanding for the chosen subject matter.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • Students will gain practical and critical understanding of how to prepare for and what is involved in a successful production of a music performance. Through work on recital performance with an accompanist students develop both presentation and team working skills.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • Students will enhance their ability to demonstrate competence in the practice of interpreting and executing musical ideas in a public arena
  • Students will gain an understanding of the chosen repertoire, an ability to organize appropriate ideas and present the results through performance in a coherent and communicable form.
  • Students will gain an advanced measure of personal expression and creativity in practical music-making.
  • Students will gain the ability to work with other musicians where required.
  • Students will gain presentation skills.
