Aims

  • The International Entrepreneurship (IE) module will seek to deepen students' understanding of the complexities and differences inherent in opportunity identification, evaluation, and exploitation in international markets. Students will acquire skills pertaining to market assessment and creating strategies to capture opportunities in different international markets.
  • The module aim is to:
  • Develop the ability to identify and exploit emerging market trends, capitalising on untapped entrepreneurial opportunities in international markets.
  • Foster a deeper understanding of entrepreneurial opportunities in global markets.
  • Foster a higher level of understanding of cultural nuances in starting new ventures and expanding across cultures.
  • Identify and exploit emerging market trends.

Content

  • The lectures and practical classes within this module will be organised around the following themes/topics:
  • Introduction to international entrepreneurship.
  • The identification, evaluation, and exploitation of global market opportunities.
  • Culture and international entrepreneurship.
  • Analysis of successful and failed international entrepreneurial ventures.
  • Business models and financing international ventures.
  • Digital technologies and entrepreneurship.
  • Innovations and failures.
  • Developing an international new venture business plan.
  • Managing international ventures.
  • Future trends in international entrepreneurship.

  • An ability to compare and critically evaluate international entrepreneurial ventures.
  • An ability to anticipate/predict future developmental trends and issues.
  • An ability to identify and exploit untapped market and opportunities, and then develop an international new venture business strategy.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • Learning outcomes will be met through a combination of lectures, seminars and guided reading.
  • The assessment of the module, by written assignment: individual report (70%): Students will write a report presenting a deep analysis of the trajectory of a "spin-out" venture within an MNE, exploring how such a venture can be created, developed, and become an independent entity over time. Group international venture pitch video presentation (30%): In groups of 4-5, students will be required to develop a presentation pitching a new idea for a "born global" venture, demonstrating the assessment, feasibility, and resilience of the venture after its launch which is designed to test students' knowledge and understanding of the subject-matter and their ability to apply it to the analysis of specific issues.

Group discussions and analysis of a case of MNE seeking and exploiting emerging market opportunities.
