Aims
- To enable students to engage different East Asian business systems in a critically informed way which identifies emerging trends and specialised management issues.
Content
- Comparative business systems.
- East Asian regional economic and business development and growth, including the East Asian economic miracle, crisis and recovery.
- Microeconomic units of growth in East, including theory of East Asian business groups, including positive and negative aspects.
- Chinese business groups, their positives and negatives and specific case materials (i.e. Shanghai Electric Group, Wanda Group, Fosun Group etc.).
- Internationalisation of Chinese business, in context of theory of emerging market MNEs.
- Japanese business and management, including keiretsu, their rise and fall.
- Japanese business systems as they relate to the emergence of Lean Production.
- South Korean business and management, including chaebol growth and restructuring
Learning Outcomes
Subject-specific Knowledge:
- Have a critical appreciation of East Asian regional economic and business dynamics;
- Have an advanced understanding of leading national (Japanese, South Korean, Chinese) business systems.
Subject-specific Skills:
- Be able to compare and critically evaluate key East Asian business organisational and management preferences;
- Be able to anticipate/predict future developmental trends and issues;
- Be able to engage with problems and opportunities for developing East/West business relationships.
Key Skills:
- Written communication; planning, organising and time management; problem solving and analysis; using initiative; computer literacy.
Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module
- Learning outcomes will be met through a combination of lectures, seminars and guided reading.
- The assessment of the module, by written assignment, is designed to test students' knowledge and understanding of the subject-matter and their ability to apply it to the analysis of specific issues.
