Aims

  • To provide an introduction to methods and designs used in research and practice in the fields of developmental and clinical psychology (and especially with development clinical groups)
  • To provide transferable skills relevant for working with developmental and clinical groups, and more broadly for professional and personal development.

Content

  • This module covers method and design issues for research in developmental and clinical psychology and covers topics such as:
  • Gold standard approaches within research for working with developmental and clinical groups
  • Gold standard approaches within clinical practice for working with developmental groups
  • Consideration of the implications of neurodiversity for research and practice
  • Transferable critical thinking skills for evaluating research and clinical practice approaches with developmental and clinical groups

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • Acquisition of knowledge about factors influencing research design and methods as applied to developmental and clinical research and practice.
  • Gold standard approaches for research and practice as applied to developmental and clinical psychology
Subject-specific Skills:
  • Developing an understanding of the nature of research design and methodologies as applied to developmental and clinical research.
  • Critical thinking skills for evaluating research design, methodology, and practice in the areas of developmental and clinical psychology.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • This module is taught through weekly two hour seminars for one term.
  • This module is assessed formatively through a group presentation.
  • Summative assessment is through an examination with students answering two essay-style questions associated with module content
