Aims

  • To consolidate and extend an understanding of the key elements underpinning the core Primary National Curriculum subjects (English, mathematics and science) through critical analysis of professional debate and educational research.
  • To consolidate and extend pedagogical issues related to teaching the core Primary National Curriculum subjects (English, mathematics and science).
  • To consolidate and extend insight into the issues involved in ensuring the effective provision for all children when teaching and learning the core Primary National Curriculum subjects (English, mathematics and science).

Content

  • Consolidate and extend knowledge and understanding of the Primary National Curriculum (DfE, 2013) and the values and assumptions which underpin it through the lens of the core subjects (English, mathematics and science) through critical analysis of professional debate and educational research.
  • Consolidate and extend an understanding of the core Primary National Curriculum subjects (English, mathematics and science).
  • To consolidate and extend build and explore pedagogical issues related to the teaching and learning of the core Primary National Curriculum subjects (English, mathematics and science).
  • Consolidate and extend an understanding of the implications for the teaching and learning of English, mathematics and science, in the primary classroom.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • Explain key ideas related to core Primary National Curriculum subjects (English, mathematics and science) in the primary setting.
  • Describe and critique evidence and theory, key pedagogical approaches and curriculum design used in the teaching of the core Primary National Curriculum subjects English, mathematics and science)
Subject-specific Skills:
  • An informed and critical awareness of research in in the teaching and learning of the core Primary National Curriculum subjects (English, mathematics and science).
  • Identify ways to relate educational theory to practice in the teaching and learning of the core Primary National Curriculum subjects (English, mathematics and science)
  • Evaluate and critique evidence and theory and pedagogical approaches related to the teaching and learning of the core Primary National Curriculum subjects (English, mathematics and science).

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • Lectures and seminars, and directed tasks will be used as appropriate to support students in developing their critical understanding of the role of the teacher in the primary classroom.
  • All learning outcomes can be assessed appropriately via written assignments.

Students who do not attend monitored activities shown under Teaching Methods and Learning Hours, or who fail to complete the summative or formative assessment(s) specified above, may be subject to the Academic Progress procedures defined in the University's General Regulation V, and may be required to leave the University.
