Aims
- To build and deepen students' knowledge and understanding of the role of the subject leader within the primary school.
- To develop an understanding of important current initiatives and curriculum legislation.
- To support students in developing an understanding of themselves as leaders.
Content
- Exploring the role and responsibilities of the Subject Lead and the features of effective leadership in education.
Learning Outcomes
Subject-specific Knowledge:
- Understanding the role of subject leadership in primary schools.
- Begin to know the key ideas related to subject leadership in the primary school.
Subject-specific Skills:
- Develop an informed and critical awareness of the complexities of subject leadership in primary schools;
- Critically reflect the role of subject and leadership in relation to education;
- Evaluate and critique systems and processes in regard to subject leadership in the primary school;
- Critically analyse literature on educational issues relevant to subject leadership in the primary context.
Key Skills:
- Communicate ideas, principles and theories effectively in written and oral form;
- Work collaboratively with peers;
- Work effectively as part of a team, on given tasks and activities;
- Engage in peer - and self - assessment;
- Manage time and work to deadlines;
- Construct and sustain a reasoned argument;
- Evaluate and make use of information from a variety of sources;

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module
- Lectures and seminars will be used as appropriate to support students in developing their critical understanding of the role of the leader in the primary school.
- All learning outcomes will be assessed appropriately via the assignment.
- This assignment is a written Career Professional Development (CPD) presentation designed for a subject leader to share with adults to change and improve practice within a National Curriculum subject. It aims to build subject knowledge, raise awareness of key pedagogical concepts, and provide practical, research-informed strategies. The presentation will translate theory into practice by outlining clear next steps for the participants. As an asynchronous resource, it will draw on current literature and policy, and may include diagrams, icons, or flowcharts to enhance clarity and engagement.
