Aims

  • This module is designed to supply mathematics relevant to students of geoscience or geophysics. It provides the mathematical foundation necessary for understanding and solving geoscience problems.
  • Aim:
  • To ensure that students on degree programmes in geoscience and geophysics have an adequate background in mathematics and can apply their mathematical knowledge to the solution of problems in geosciences.

Content

  • Introductory review.
  • Linear algebra.
  • Complex numbers.
  • Vectors.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • By the end of the module students will:
  • Be able to solve a range of predictable or less predictable problems for geoscientists.
  • Have an awareness of the basic concepts of theoretical mathematics in these areas:
  • Linear algebra.
  • Complex numbers.
  • Vectors.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • Apply mathematical techniques to solve quantitative problems in geoscience or geophysics contexts.
Key Skills:
  • Solve numerical problems using computer or non-computer techniques.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • The module content is delivered in lectures and is reinforced by problem sheets.
  • A single examination covers all of the lecture material.
