Prerequisites
- At least 3 Maths modules taken in second year.
Corequisites
- At least two other Level 3 maths modules AND Group Project 3 (MATH3XXX)..
Excluded Combination of Modules
- Level 3 project modules in any other department.
Aims
- To conduct an investigation of an advanced and specialised mathematical, or mathematically adjacent, topic.
- To provide a supportive environment for self-directed study.
- To further develop the students’ written and oral communication skills.
Content
- Projects vary in topic and in approach and capture the essence of research led teaching.
- The individual project allows student to explore an advanced mathematical, or mathematically adjacent, topic in a way that develops independent learning and critical thinking skills.
- The individual project gives the student the opportunity to show initiative and take an active part in directing their learning.
- Management of the project remains the responsibility of the student with guidance and assistance from the supervisor. A diary of activities, to be maintained by the student, will aid in recording the learning the student has undertaken throughout the term.
- A written report will allow the student to demonstrate their grasp of the material they’ve learnt using standard scientific conventions, further honing their scientific writing skills.
- An oral exam in the first week of the Easter term will assess the student’s understanding of the topic they’ve investigated.
Learning Outcomes
Subject-specific Knowledge:
- Students will engage in an independent learning of an advanced mathematical, or mathematical related, topic.
- Students will demonstrate mastery of knowledge in a specialised topic by means of logical reasoning, critical thinking, and conceptual understanding.
Subject-specific Skills:
- Students will be empowered to shape their learning through self-directed exploration of advanced mathematical, or mathematical related, material.
- Students will be able to reflect on self-directed learning in a scientific context.
- Students will be able to communicate complex scientific ideas in written and oral forms.
Key Skills:
- Students will develop independent learning skills as well as the tools to facilitate and support self-directed investigation.
- Students will be able to synthesise and integrate material from diverse sources to achieve a defined objective.
- Students will be able to effectively communicate in various settings.
Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module
- The students will meet with their supervisor nine times throughout the term to discuss the material and receive support in their self-directed study.
- The students will be required to maintain a diary which will record their activities throughout the term and allow them to reflect and self-monitor their learning.
- The student will submit a 15-20 pages report which will summarise their learning while demonstrating understanding and critical analysis of an advanced mathematical, or mathematically adjacent, content.
- The students will participate in an oral exam which will assess their comprehension of the material covered.
