Aims
- To enable students to study the relationship between the various activities of Christian worship with Christian theology and spirituality, drawing on insights from the human sciences.
- To enable students to integrate their experience of worship- which will be gained from leadership of, and participation in, public worship-with principles arising from the practice of Christian worship.
- To encourage students to apply the principles of worship to their practice of leading, planning and reflecting upon acts of worship in various contexts.
- To encourage students to address the interplay between worship and mission in current contexts.
Content
- Study of the key theological and biblical understandings of worship, including an examination of the theology and spirituality expressed through the various manifestations of a particular tradition.
- Worship and the place of ritual, symbolism, space and music.
- Theory and practice of planning and leading worship in a range of contexts.
- Exploration of the relationship between worship and the mission of the church.
Learning Outcomes
Subject-specific Knowledge:
- Give a detailed analysis of the theological and biblical understandings of the nature of worship and how these relate to spirituality and contemporary practices of worship in at least one specific tradition.
- Describe and analyse the place of ritual, symbol, space and music in the context of contemporary practices of worship.
Subject-specific Skills:
- Design and plan worship competently, sensitively and appropriately in the relevant tradition for a range of contexts, communicating effectively in a range of contexts.
- Reflect critically on their own, and others’ practice in preparing and leading worship with particular reference to the mission of the church.
Key Skills:
- Identify, gather and evaluate source materials for a range of purposes.
- Undertake a critical analysis of information and arguments, communicating the findings effectively, showing critical awareness of their own beliefs, commitments and prejudices.
- Take responsibility for a task that involves independent inquiry; the management of time, resources and use of IT; meeting deadlines, evaluating the task and learning from it.
Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module
- Lectures provide content, a conceptual framework and a survey of approaches within a subject area that enable students to locate their learning in a wider context, to make connections with other disciplines, and to evaluate and apply their learning to different contexts.
- The module will be assessed by written assignment.
