Aims

  • The module is designed for those training for, or already practitioners in, Christian ministry and mission. It aims to enable them to draw appropriately on the arts in expressing, exploring, shaping, nourishing and critiquing faith.

Content

  • An exploration of potential areas of engagement between Christian belief and practice and the creative arts that might help to nourish and extend theological wisdom, and, in some cases, re-articulate and re-conceive it.
  • Investigation of a range of theoretical perspectives: the module is grounded in a wide variety of case studies, encouraging habits of informed theological and aesthetic reflection.
  • Opportunities to engage with Christian practices of discipleship through the arts and to reflect critically on this experience.
  • Tutors’ expertise and the students’ preferences will play an important part in deciding which of the arts will be the foci of the module.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • Offer a coherent account of theological rationales for Christian engagement with, and learning from, the arts.
  • Describe, analyse and evaluate the relationship of at least one of the arts to the practices of Christian discipleship in the past and in contemporary contexts.
  • Demonstrate engagement with key concepts and processes of inquiry in contemporary research and writings in the interdisciplinary field of the arts, theology and practices of Christian discipleship.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • Critically evaluate and apply different approaches to engaging with the arts as a way of expressing, exploring, shaping, nourishing and critiquing faith.
  • Critically analyse the changing representation of Christian doctrines in at least one of the arts, across different times and cultures.
Key Skills:
  • Identify, gather, analyse and critically evaluate textual source materials, including material from primary sources and scholarly research, and communicate their findings with clarity and fairness.
  • Critically evaluate ideas, arguments and assumptions, using them to construct and communicate coherent and well-reasoned arguments, showing critical awareness of their own and others’ beliefs, commitments and prejudices, to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • Lectures provide content, a conceptual framework and a survey of approaches within a subject area that enable students to locate their learning in a wider context, to make connections with other disciplines, and to evaluate and apply their learning to different contexts.
  • The module will be assessed by Essay.
