Aims
- The main focus of the course is to develop a 'musical ear'.
- The course aims to increase knowledge and awareness about musical sound, and to improve aural and practical skills in listening and performing music.
Content
- The course provides an introduction to basic ideas about musical acoustics, and aims to increase knowledge and skills for recognising 'patterns' music forms at many levels. The course is accompanied by aural exercises to include recognition/identification, dictation and memorisation. Throughout the course students take individual instrumental/vocal lessons with a teacher from the Department's list of approved teachers.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module
- The module consists of 22 lectures and 3 tutorials and is supported by instrumental and vocal tuition. Lectures address theoretical issues in conjunction with directed reading, and incorporate aural exercises. Tutorials focus on small-group discussion on course-work. Additional teaching is provided by instrumental and vocal tutors, who develop performance competences. Formative assessment will require written or practical exercises.
