Aims

  • To enable students to research a small scale topic or issue of professional interest or relevance through the use of appropriate research strategies and to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the small scale topic or issue.

Content

  • The focus of the SIS will be decided in consultation between the student, the module convenor and the supervisor. The title of the SIS must be agreed at the commencement of the registration for the module.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • Critical understanding of key issues associated with the selected small scale topic or issue.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • By the end of the module students will be able to:
  • Examine a topic or issue of professional interest or relevance;
  • Use appropriate research strategies;
  • Demonstrate they can work independently;
  • Show critical and reflective thinking on the limitations of the research (either their own or others).
Key Skills:
  • Demonstrate the ability to research literature, including for example: searching, synthesising, summarising and critiquing literatures;
  • Demonstrate the ability to evaluate educational research;
  • Use ICT when presenting assignments;
  • Organise and plan;
  • Formulate, analyse and solve problems;
  • Learn independently.

  • With guidance via tutorial supervision and support material in the Study Guide and through individual research.

Formative Assessment:

All students are given regular formative feedback from the supervisor on the progress of the supervised independent study through tutorial discussions and the presentation of draft material.


Attendance at all activities marked with this symbol will be monitored. Students who fail to attend these activities, or to complete the summative or formative assessment specified above, will be subject to the procedures defined in the University's General Regulation V, and may be required to leave the University
